Honduras is a territory with multicultural civilization of different indigenous races and history.

Beside the wonderful beaches, there are many other places that we can visit in this Central American paradise.

We have 5 recommendations for you, with different archaeological sites that you can visit on your trip to this destination:

 

TALGUA CAVES

Located in the city of Catacamas, in the Olancho state, Honduras. It’s also known as the “Shining skulls cave”. The remains found inside the caves are supposed to belong to the Classic Middle Period, between 1200-1400 b.C.

Local visitors and international tourists explore this caves and live an amazing experience full of adventure, where they can explore the depths of each cave and the the well preserved ossuaries of the remains of this ancient civilization.

 

EL PUENTE (THE BRIDGE) ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

One of the most influential cities of the Mayan and Lenca culture was discovered in 1935.

Thanks to the support of the Japanese government, this might not be one of the biggest cities discovered, but is one of the best preserved sites.

Besides the different structures, you can also visit the museum in site, so you can appreciate some of the remainings and a scaled map of the distribution of the city.

 

LOS NARANJOS ECHO-ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

The Naranjos zone is the most recommended for the observation of birds in this country, in this area more than 250 species have been identified.

Trails full of flora, and some remainings of different structures of 4,000 years of antiquity, besides it has nice boats to do rides around the lake, learn more of the habitants and visit the museum and a cafeteria where you can enjoy several delicious dishes.

 

COPÁN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

This incredible site is one of the most important destinations of Honduras.

It was discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio and the structures housed one of the most important cities of the V and IX century.

Because this place is so close to the Guatemalan boarders, it’s believed that this ancient city was an important route for business and commerce between cities.

Is not only a good place full of history and culture, but it also has a lot of natural beauties like the bird park and thermal waters.

 

YARUMELA/ EL CHICAL

After a restoration maded in 2019, this amazing archaeological site, was enabled for visitors from abroad and from Honduras.

The place has different mounds and structures, included the structure 101, well known as “El Cerrito” (The Hill) that has 19 meters of approximate hight.

Yarumela was part of a region that covered around 16,000 square kilometers and shared the space with other important cities that are archaeological sites today: La Venta, Los Naranjos y la Playa de los Muertos (The beach of the dead).
