Yaxchilan is an ancient Mayan city located on the Usumacinta River, currently known as the Ocosingo municipality of Chiapas, Mexico. Yaxchilan is one of the most powerful Mayan sites thanks to architectural styles, it is especially known for the stone lintels sculpted above the main doors of the place.

Within the site there have been 120 buildings identified with different functions, Yaxchilan has a large number of sculptures such as monolithic carved stelae and narratives of reliefs carved with lintels.  In addition, the 50 buildings that can be visited have three major groups: The Great Plaza, The Little Acropolis and The Great Acropolis. These are connected to each other with ramps, stairways and terraces. The Small Acropolis is the highest site and is aligned with the Usumacinta River, causing unconventional orientation to large structures.
