Cleaning protocols for your vehicle

In many countries, such as Guatemala, the public transportation system has been suspended indefinitely. This means that many people use other means to get from one place to another.

These conditions makes both drivers and companions to expose themselves to getting Coronavirus or some other disease by sharing this small space for an indefinite period of time.

Avoid as much as possible the bacteria and viruses that remain on the surfaces of the interiors and exteriors of your vehicle with these practical tips:

 

Before getting in

Have a cleaning product on hand every morning, microfiber or paper towels and gloves. With these elements, clean all hard surfaces, such as the handles, interior of the doors (not recommended if they have a fabric covering), steering wheel, armrests, buttons and automotive controls.

Make sure you DO NOT use products that contain bleach or ammonia within their components. When the vehicle is closed, these elements can be highly harmful to the driver and the passengers who are joining him.

Rules for all passengers

If you travel alone daily to work or to shop for necessities, always carry a mask with you. It is recommended that if you have all the windows closed and the air conditioning on, that you take short breaks of 10 seconds every 10 or 15 minutes; removing the mask for a moment from your face.

If you have companions, it is necessary for all of you to disinfect your hands before getting on or touching any surface of the vehicle. Also that everyone wear the mask well placed on the face at all times.

To do every single day

When you arrive back at home you’ll need to clean all the surfaces of the car again, both outside and inside. Open all windows and doors to ventilate the interiors. Use cleaning products with chlorine or 70% alcohol to carefully clean surfaces.

If the vehicle seats are made of fabric, it is recommended to use an atomizer with a product that contains alcohol instead of chlorine for disinfection. You can also use some fabric soap or shampoo if these surfaces are too dirty.

After completing this procedure as thoroughly as possible, be sure to wash your hands and take a bath or change clothes before doing other activities indoors.

 

Other aspects to consider

These are other tips that you should not forget when cleaning your car. Put a lot of emphasis on the areas most prone to bacteria buildup such as the steering wheel, gear stick, door handles, parking brake, radio and touch screens. The other element that we must sanitize are the keys, since in these type of materials viruses and bacteria can survive from 24 up to 72 hours.

If you have companions while you are driving, we do not recommend keeping the windows closed or turning on the air conditioning. It's better that everyone wears a mask and that the space inside the car is ventilated as much as possible by opening the windows.
