Hike through Cerro San Gíl 

This protected area is an incredible spring reserve that is located in between Livingston, Puerto Barrios and Morales, this place is also important as one of the largest remnants of humid tropical forest in Guatemala.

The scenic beauty that the forests provide to the place are one of the main attractions of local and international tourism. Among the various activities that you can enjoy are hiking along the Escobas river Tropical Forest Trail.

You can also relax in the Las Escobas public natural park, or venture along the path that leads to the twin towers, some viewpoints with incredible sights towards Amatique Bay where you can appreciate all the wild surroundings.

 

Boat tour on Lake Izabal

This immense and beautiful lake is the largest in our country: 45 km long by 20 km wide, occupying a total area of 589.6 km². Tours by boat or motorboat are in charge of taking tourists on a route of the best places in this lake, including the mangroves and the sighting of different types of birds and some aquatic species.

Boat tours can often be combined with other activities such as visits to villages and other cultural attractions.

 

Knowing more about the Mayan culture

You can enjoy learning a little more about the history of Guatemala by visiting this archaeological site in Puerto Barrios. The Quirigua archaeological site is a thirty-four hectare protected area which has not been altered since 1910, when the United Fruit Company declared this important area a reserve.

The incredible thing about Quirigua is that despite being a small center and not presenting monumental architecture, it has one of the most extensive main squares in the Mayan area, as well as a set of various impressive sculptures and steles, including the tallest sculpted monument (Stele E) that has been recorded to date in Mesoamerica.

 

Unique beach in Guatemala

A little piece of the Caribbean islands is in Guatemala, with white sand, warm waters, a calm sea to swim and enjoy the Caribbean nature. There is a small restaurant with good food, to complete this beautiful experience.

The trip must be done by boat and despite the fact that the beach is a private area, it allows visitors to enter, paying a fee of approximately Q.20.00 ($3.00 USD) per person.

 

Caribbean Gastronomy

There is no better way to enjoy a trip than trying the local Caribbean cuisine. You can enjoy unique dishes with ingredients from this beautiful place Puerto Barrios. From the famous Rice and Beans, a combination of rice, fried beans and in some cases, accompanied by chicken or meat.

Or enjoy a delicious seafood broth, or some jutes (seashell snails) in coconut and green banana broth.
